HIV Services
Our programs provide a community that strives to address basic needs of individuals living with HIV/AIDS with respect, compassion and safety.
Our services include the HIV Day Center and the Daily Bread Express, and they are programs of Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon. The Day Center is a community center for low income people living with HIV/AIDS. It was opened in Portland in May 1990 as the first free-standing, community-based program of its kind in the United States. It was created in direct response to needs outlined by a coalition of healthcare providers in 1987.
In 1992, the Daily Bread Express began meal delivery for low-income, home-bound individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
Kim's story
“Kim” is a long-time client of the Day Center. When she returned to the Day Center after the pandemic, her housing status had changed—she was houseless. Kim has many cognitive disabilities that cause her to need more intentional support than other clients. Day Center staff have been working with Kim’s care team from other agencies, including her medical case management team and housing team, to support her. One obstacle for Kim was getting her Social Security Income (SSI). With the help of her care team and the staff at the Day Center, she is now receiving her SSI and soon she will be housed.
Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon
Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon (EMO) meets the immediate needs of communities in the greater Portland area through our six direct service programs, while seeking long-term solutions through state-wide public policy and advocacy work.
Our direct service programs support refugees and immigrants, food insecure people, low-income people living with HIV, unaccompanied youth experiencing homelessness and survivors of domestic violence.
Our Public Policy Advocacy team provides pathways for EMO clients, community members and Oregonians of faith to bring about change in the U.S. Congress, at the Oregon State Capitol and in local government.
Our Mission
Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon (EMO) brings together diverse communities of faith to learn, serve and advocate for justice, peace and the integrity of creation.
